Why Academics Writing Stinks

Updated: Mar 3, 2023

"Writing, the art of communicating thoughts to the mind through the eye, is the great invention of the world... enabling us to converse with the dead, the absent, and the unborn, at all distances of time and space."

-Abraham Lincoln.

When I read the article “Why Academics Writing Stinks” I started reflecting on how important it is to write well to communicate your ideas. I have observed that the problem begins in elementary, following standardized curriculums focusing on reading and math; there is no time left for writing.

Steven Peaker uses an example of a cookbook to illustrate a bad habit some writers have. He said that when opening a cookbook, you want to go directly to the point, like ingredients and steps; what about that instead of the author going on and on with philosophical and religious traditions about the dish, the book lost its purpose. Here is the importance of writing clearly, in short, and concisely.

Writing has been one of my weaknesses during all my academic years. It’s been challenging to put into words my ideas after reflecting. Still not good enough, but it’s getting better.

It was delightful to read this article by Steven Pinker
