Online Learning

Instructional Design is the creation of instructional materials that consider how students learn and the methods that most effectively help the learners achieve their academic goals. It is used to identify gaps in knowledge, skills, and attitudes of students or employees, analyze learning needs, and develop learning material to close them. Designing an effective learning experience involves three significant components: learning objectives, learning activities, and assessments.  There are different Instructional Design Models to help us create effective learning material, the top seven are: the ADDIE ModelMerrill’s Principles of Instruction, Gagne’s Nine Events of Instructions, Bloom’s Taxonomy, Dick and Carey Model, Kemp Design Model, and Action Mapping by Cathy Moore.

Instructional Design Process

As a part of my Innovation Plan, I created a course to prepare my team for the ePortfolio implementation.  Participants will design and develop an ePortfolio and model this practice with their students.

The course is entirely online and Outcome Base Education (OBE). The instructional design aligns the outcomes, activities, and assessments and meets nine academic general standards:

* Course overview and introduction     * Learning Objectives (Outcomes)                   * Assessment and Measurement

* Instructional material                          * Learning activities and learner interaction     * Course Technology

* Learner and instructional support       * Accessibility and Usability

The first step in the instructional design was to analyze the needs of my target audience and identify the learning objectives. When my 3-Column Table was ready, I started to work on the design by creating an outline to list all the elements that I wanted to include in the course.

The design and implementation of online learning is an iterative process that will continue long after I launch the course. It is vital to stay true to the learning outcomes/goals but continually adjust the activities and assessments to help the learners achieve those outcomes/goals and maintain an effective learning experience.

The usability testing may be one of the most critical milestones in the development process, moving from the planning to the course's actual function. The earlier I identify problems, the easier they are to fix.
