"Every successful presentation is built on four pillars. People, idea, passion & preparations."
Hazinah Kutty Mammi
I believe words are extremely powerful tools that can motivate, inspire or destroy. Duarte argues that ideas are our most powerful tools, but an idea is powerless if it stays inside us. If we never pull that idea out for others to contend with, it will die with us. I agree with this statement; the success of our idea of being adopted instead rejected is how we communicate it.
Nancy Duarte argues that the best way to communicate ideas is with a story where the audience is the hero. Using a plot structure in our presentation can touch our audience's hearts, making it easier for them to digest and recall the ideas later. She also says that good presentations follow a pattern where the speaker moves people from the status quo to the big picture. Moreover, Duarte suggests combining verbal and visual components to help the spectators to see what we are saying.
Applying these strategies to my call to action presentation, I will start pointing out the reality of our PDs (status quo), making my audience aware that we have a problem. I will show why it is crucial to change this practice and what we can lose if we continue doing it. I will give them the role of the hero and make them feel they have the power to change it. I will offer a solution with my Alternative PL proposal (what). Finally, I will show my audience how following Gulamhussein's five principles of an effective PL can make a difference.
If I want to spread the ideas of this Alternative PL and move people in my organization, I need to follow Sinek's advice. First, I will make an outline to show the audience how the pieces fall together. When I start recording, I will be myself and sound confident. I will transform my anxiety into excitement and take my time to pace the words.
Following all these presentation strategies and supporting the ideas presented with my research, I will appeal to my audience's hearts to buy into my call for action proposal.
