Digital Tools and Digital Environments

“If you want something new, you have to stop doing something old.” –Peter F.

We live in a rapidly changing world where technology is part of our daily lives—learning by exploration and doing. If we want to prepare students with 21st-century skills for the jobs of tomorrow, we need to innovate our teaching methodology and incorporate technology in our classrooms.

We need to create digital environments where students can enhance their learning and use different digital resources such as cell phones, tablets, Chromebooks, laptops, and Artificial Intelligence apps like ChatGPT, Soundraw, or Photomath instead of fearing these resources as distractions or tools for cheating.

If we guide our students to assess the merits of Artificial Intelligence tools, we are helping them to develop their critical thinking skills. As educators, we need to be lifelong learners; it is our responsibility to keep updated with new trends in technology and use these resources as learning tools to connect, collaborate and create.

It is fundamental also to teach students how to inspect and manage devices in the classroom. This instruction builds character, citizenship, and a sense of fiscal responsibility.

The Ted Talk Build a School in the Cloud by Sugata Mitra made me realize the importance of encouraging our students to collaborate with others and facilitate the technological tools if we want them to become self-directed learners. Switch our teaching role to a facilitator and stimulate students' brains with "big" questions.

I believe in the power of the mind and agree with Patti Dobrowolski; we need to vision our future, picture it, believe it, and build it little by little. If we draw our dream and work toward it, we can achieve it. My innovation plan started with a dream; I am working to make it a reality. We also need to model this behavior with our students and help them accomplish their dreams too.
