Changing Behavior

Updated: Apr 24, 2023

"If you want to change attitudes, start with a change in behavior".

Katharine Hepburn

It is easier to believe that certain common sense practices will change people’s behaviors. Dr. Cross said that this is a wrong assumption. To prove this erroneous thinking she illustrates three myths.

Mith #1. Education will help behavior. If we want to influence people to follow certain behavior, we need to present the information in a perceptible and personalized way.

Mith #2. Need to change attitudes to change behavior. We need first to set behavioral expectations and connect them to values that are important to our audiences.

Mith #3. People know what motivates them to take action. The truth is that social norms or social pressure are more potent motivators.

Joseph Grenny says that if we want to change the world, we need to change behavior. To be inspired and to inspire others, we need to set audacious goals instead of reasonable ones.

In his video “Change Behavior- Change the World” he shows us how each of the six sources of influence change behavior.

Dr. Cross and Joseph Grenny coincide that ability /education by itself is not enough to change behavior, we also need motivation.

To be a good influencer, it is necessary to set clear, specific, achievable, and measurable goals. I relate this to my implementation outline. We must also identify the vital behaviors or critical practices that will greatly impact the desired result. Grenny mentions four strategies to identify them.

Key #1 Some behaviors are obvious but underused; These behaviors are there, but no one sees them. I need to pay attention to those difficult or unpleasant tasks.

Key #2 Look for crucial moments. I need to identify the behaviors that can jeopardize my initiative when problems occur.

Key #3 Learn from Positive Deviants. Learning from those that already survive the struggle is important and can help me to find solutions.

Key #4 Spot culture busters. I need to determine what school norms could work against my innovation.
