A new culture of Learning

"Cultivating the imagination for a world of constant change."

Douglas Thomas

To recreate our classrooms in a way that aligns with this culture of learning, teachers need to shift their roles from content providers to context creators. The challenge will be the support of the administrators to do so and the pressure we have each year with the standardized test.

Thomas & Seely (2011) explain that to develop a new culture of learning, the teacher needs to create environments where students have unlimited access to resources and information, pushing passion and fostering imagination while allowing students to construct and cultivate knowledge for themselves.

If we want to engage our students, we need to create significant learning environments that include the play element (tension between the rules of the game and the freedom to act). Play is a concept in which learners create in the face of obstacles, use their imagination, wonder about ways to solve problems, and enjoy the learning process.

The twenty-first century is about embracing change, looking forward to what will come next, or viewing the future as a set of new possibilities. It is a new world where connectivity is everywhere, and access to information sources is unlimited. We must create significant learning environments (CSLE) where the student is the center, interaction and collaboration with peers, digitally enhance, and backward curriculum design. The role of the teacher is a facilitator, coach, or mentor. Helping our students learn how to learn will prepare them to be critical thinkers engaged in deeper learning (Harapnuik, 2015).

We need to build effective learning environments to provide opportunities to explore and experiment. As Bates (2015) states, learning is dynamic and growing, and we cannot just pour knowledge into someone.
