Creating Powerful Interactions by building relationships

"When children trust, they take on new challenges, demonstrate persistence, and ask questions when confused". -Stipek, 2006

As educators, we make a difference in our student's lives. Why is important to create powerful interactions with our students? The research shows that by creating positive relationships leads to powerful interactions that can extend children's learning.

Steps of powerful interactions:

  • Be present (pause, breathe, notice, be here) - Emotionally and physically

  • Connect (observe, approach, tap into trust) - Build on, deepen, and nurture the relationship.

  • Extend (model, stretch, learn) - Encouraging learning by engaging the student.

Connect strategies

  • Slow down, stay in the moment

  • keep learning about children

  • Listen to children

  • Personalize your interactions

  • Guide children's behavior

  • Keep trust growing

Extend Strategies

  • Help children see themselves as thinkers

  • Respond to curiosity

  • Use mirror talk (Describe what the child is doing)

  • Have conversations

  • Inspire imaginative play

  • Solve problems together

  • Use rich vocabulary
