GROWTH MINDSET
“No matter what your ability is, effort is what ignites that ability and turns it into accomplishment.”
― Carol S. Dweck, Mindset: The New Psychology Of Success
The importance of the Growth Mindset
By changing the way we think, we can change the way we learn. Adopting a growth mindset lets us enjoy the learning process when trying to develop and master a skill. It also allows us to learn from our mistakes. This state of mind can be seen as a positive lifestyle where we can learn from others and accept constructive criticism. The growth mindset understands the importance of persistence and determination. Knowing that our talents and intelligence can be developed makes us explore, experience, and accomplish more in our learning path.
Adopting a growth mindset allows us to reach our full potential.
The Impact of the growth Mindset on my ADL journey
My innovation plan was born as an opportunity to engage my students in their schooling (My Why). I want to give them the learning experience of a centered learning environment and COVA approach (choice, ownership, voice through authentic learning opportunities). ePortfolios are learning tools that follow these principles. Since I created mine until now, my ePortfolio has kept me engaged in learning. I recognized that, at times, it was very challenging, but I confronted it with a growth mindset and embraced the learning opportunity. Considering that implementing ePortfolios will demand new skills from the adopters, I realized the necessity to prepare them by creating a growth mindset environment.
MINDSET PLAN
Purpose
This plan aims to develop a growth mindset that leads to a positive attitude, self-confidence, perseverance when facing challenges, and long-life learning. Based on Dr. Dweck’s Mindset theory.
Implementation/Promotion
1. Preparation (starting now)
The facilitator models a growth mindset.
-
Identify your weakness. Overcome your fears and accept challenges.
-
Show students how you learn from your mistakes.
-
Remember that learning new abilities requires focus and hard work.
-
Provide different strategies for students; everyone can learn with the right one.
ePortfolios adopters and their mindsets
-
Teachers and students will watch the slide presentation “Learning About Mindset”. This is the starting point for a change. Knowing about mindsets will show them a different perspective on their learning.
2. Promote Growth Mindset change (after preparation).
ePortfolio adopters will watch the slide presentation
“4-Step process to change your mindset".
-
This is a resource to promote a shift to a Growth Mindset.
3. Keep cultivating a Growth mindset (after the promotion).
Classroom displays.
-
Create a growth mindset environment by communicating that learning is a process. Promote this with a message of “yet” using a classroom poster and daily reminders, especially when students struggle.
ePortfolio is an excellent environment to promote a growth mindset.
-
Using the space for reflection, the ePortfolio adopters will have the opportunity to activate their growth mindset from a weekly questions list sent by e-mail. This is an example of this list.
-
Encouraging adopters to give and receive feedback on their ePortfolio’s learning pieces of evidence with a growth mindset.
-
Accept constructive criticism with a growth mindset and learn from others.
